Prelude Party, Concert, Extraordinary Experiences celebrating Tuesday Musical 130th anniversary

Celebrating 130 years as an anchor arts organization in Northeast Ohio, Tuesday Musical is opening its 2017-18 Mainstage season with “Prelude Party, Concert and Extraordinary Experiences" on Saturday, Sept. 16, at EJ Thomas Hall in Akron.

The Prelude Party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. will be in EJ’s Goodrich Lobby with food stations catered by Splendid Fare, open bar and music.

Fast-paced and forward-focused, the Prelude Concert at 7:30 p.m. in EJ’s concert hall will showcase Tuesday Musical’s programs and collaborations. Escher String Quartet, Tuesday Musical’s Quartet-in-Residence, will perform the world premiere of a piece written by University of Akron composer James Wilding to commemorate the anniversary. Other performers include young violinist Grace Brown of Tuesday Musical’s Brahms Allegro Junior Music Club, 2017 Tuesday Musical Scholarship Competition winner and soprano Olivia Boen, and 2016 Cleveland International Piano Competition winner Nikita Mndoyants.

Throughout Prelude, everyone can bid in the silent auction of Extraordinary Experiences and purchase raffle tickets to win a New York City arts adventure for two. After the concert, the entire audience is invited to the lobby for dessert and a champagne toast.

Tuesday Musical’s 2017-18 Mainstage season also features the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble on Oct. 19, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in a concert that juxtaposes works by Romanticism giants Antonin Dvoƙák and Johannes Brahms on Jan. 23, pianist Andreas Haefliger on March 8, the conductor-less Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with violinist Augustin Hadelich on March 28, and the Brentano String Quartet with flutist Marina Piccinini on April 18. All Main Stage season concerts are in EJ Thomas Hall at 7:30 p.m. Most include a pre-concert talk one hour before the performance.

The 2017-18 FUZE season also takes place on EJ’s stage. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis is Sept. 28, Vienna Boys Choir with “Christmas in Vienna” is Nov. 29, and Chicago Jazz Orchestra with "A Tribute to Sarah Vaughan” is March 17, 2018. Presented in collaboration with The University of Akron, the September and March concerts are part of a yearlong celebration of the UA Jazz Studies Program’s 40th anniversary and the UA Bittle Jazz Artist-in-Residence series’ 15th anniversary. The September concert is supported by Frances Yates Bittle, and the September and March concerts are also supported by UA’s Kulas Concert Series.

Season subscriptions are on sale now for both series. Season subscriptions are $220 and $190 for Mainstage and $110 and $95 for Fuze. First-time subscribers to Mainstage save 50 percent on subscriptions, and all subscription packages provide significant savings on single-ticket prices.
