Downtown Akron Sakura Festival Returns April 4, 2026

March 3, 2026, Akron, Ohio — Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) announces the sixth annual Downtown Akron Sakura Festival along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail on Saturday, April 4, from 1 to 7 pm, with activity planned at Lock 2, Lock 3, the Towpath Trail near Spaghetti Warehouse, the Mustill Store Museum and James R. Williams Tower. The celebration typically brings an estimated 5,000–8,000 visitors to the neighborhood to commemorate the beginning of spring and honor the tremendous contribution of the Japanese Association of Northeast Ohio (JANO) to our community—472 cherry blossom trees generously donated to the City of Akron and planted more than a decade ago.

Chiaki Nakayama of JANO says, “The cherry blossoms invoke a feeling of renewal and rebirth after a long harsh winter. We invite you to join this celebration to share happiness and fun with others.”

Festival highlights this year will include dozens of food and retail vendors, live musical and cultural dance performances, story and history walks, tea and sake tastings, a wish ribbon activity, horticulturist walks, a guided scenic bike ride, a bonsai display, guided painting, ikebana demonstrations, a headlining performance by J-Art Band on the stage of Lock 3’s Maynard Performance Pavilion and more. A full schedule of the activities and attractions at each location, including some that require participants to register ahead of time, will be available at downtownakron.com.

DAP Communications Director Dominic Caruso says, “The blooming of the Japanese cherry blossom trees showcases one of the unique gifts of the district, access to green public space. The Sakura Festival celebrates the beauty of the canal and the Towpath Trail as perhaps the most meaningful connector of downtown to our neighbors in Ohio and Erie Canal Park, Summit Lake and beyond to the south, and Cascade Valley and Cuyahoga Valley National Park to the north.”

DAP will join JANO in following the blossoms as they emerge and will use social media to invite visitors to view their splendor throughout the brief bloom. Follow DAP on social media for updates on the blossoms. The exact blooming dates of the trees are difficult to predict and only last a short time, but the festival will take place April 4 regardless.

Additionally, DAP will bring back the popular Sakura Photo Contest that takes place on Facebook and Instagram. The contest will be open March 22 – April 17, 2026. To enter the contest, social media users should post their best cherry blossom photos and tag DAP. Multiple entries are warmly welcomed. Prizes will be awarded to the photographers of the top three photos.
