Mayor Malik Activates Warming Center Sunday and Monday
Akron, Ohio, Dec. 12, 2025 — Today, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced the City of Akron will extend hours at Summit Lake Community Center (380 W. Crosier St.) on Sunday, Dec. 14 and Monday, Dec. 15 to provide a warming center for residents in need. Summit Lake Community Center will be open between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm those days. All other City of Akron community centers will be closed on Sunday and open during their normal business hours Monday.
The city will continue to monitor temperatures and will extend community center hours as necessary. Unless otherwise specified, the centers will return to their normal business hours starting Tuesday, Dec. 16.
“As we enter the winter months, we know that some in our community are struggling with housing, heating, or both and we want to provide an option for a safe, warm space where they can be treated with dignity and respect,” said Mayor Malik. “In years past, we have extended these hours through 7pm but this season, we have extended that even further through 10pm. While we do not have the infrastructure to house folks overnight at our community centers, there will be free transportation to the emergency overnight center where they can stay out of the frigid temps overnight as well. Make sure to check on your neighbors and older family members as these colder temperatures move in and call 2-1-1 if you or someone you know need assistance.”
Akron METRO RTA is providing free fares on all ADA, SCAT, and METRO Direct routes through the end of 2025. This includes routes from the warming center to the emergency overnight center. Learn more at www.yourmetrobus.org.
The Emergency Overnight Center located at 111 East Voris St. will be open from 7 pm to 8 am on Fri. Dec. 12, Sat. Dec. 13, Sun. Dec. 14, and Mon. Dec. 15. For the most up to date information, sign up for alerts here.
The Emergency Overnight Center is a community partnership between The Peter Maurin Center, Summit County Continuum of Care, and Community Support Services with partial funding provided by the City of Akron. They provide food, shelter, and clothing. You can find more information about their services at https://www.akronemergencyshelter.org/.
