ASO to present Jazz Meets Symphony on April 14

The Akron Symphony Orchestra will return to the jazz age as we welcome the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra for Jazz Meets Symphony on April 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Akron has a vibrant history with jazz music as a series of jazz clubs populated Howard Street from the 1930s through the 1960s. The clubs were a popular stop for jazz musicians like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway as they traveled between New York City and Chicago.

We will pay homage to that history by performing a wide variety of jazz favorites made popular by Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Glenn Miller.

Joining us on stage will be the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Northeast Ohio’s premier jazz voice for more than three decades. Led by Paul Ferguson, the jazz orchestra promotes jazz in its historical and contemporary forms, through concerts with gifted jazz musicians, arrangers, composers and educators in Northeast Ohio.

Guest performers for the evening will include Theron Brown, Evelyn Wright, Jack Schantz and Thomas Reed.

Following the concert, the Akron Symphony will hold an After Party at Jilly’s Music Room, located at 111 N. Main St. The After Party will feature drink specials and live music. There is no cover charge.

Single tickets for Jazz Meets Symphony start at just $25. Tickets are available at akronsymphony.org or by calling the Symphony Box Office at 330.535.8131.
