A Nation Divided. A People Reflected. Akron Artist Althea Jones Explores American Identity Through Her New Series American Kaleidoscope

October, 13, 2026, AKRON, OH — What do Americans see when they look at their country? What do they see when they look at one another? In American Kaleidoscope, Akron-based multidisciplinary artist Althea Jones transforms individual perspectives into a visual exploration of American identity, inviting audiences to reflect on their personal hopes, responsibility and futures related to the country.

Informed by survey responses from more than 100 individuals, the collection brings diverse perspectives into conversation through multimedia artwork. Drawing inspiration from the visual storytelling of Romare Bearden and the cultural narratives of playwright August Wilson, Jones explores how personal experiences contribute to the larger story of America. The result is an invitation to look beyond assumptions, consider perspectives different from our own, and reflect on the people behind the opinions.

As the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence wind down and midterm elections ramp up, American Kaleidoscope offers an opportunity to consider not only what divides Americans, but also the human experiences that connect them. Rather than providing easy answers, Jones's work opens space for reflection and dialogue about who we are, how we see one another, and what it means to share a country.

The public is invited to experience American Kaleidoscope at an opening reception on Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 5–8 p.m. at Summit Artspace in Akron, Ohio.
