Summer is in full swing in downtown Akron

The streets and public spaces of downtown Akron are fully activated this summer as Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) partners with local businesses and organizations for Summer in Downtown. Cascade Plaza activities are possible through support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Events are weekly or monthly and scheduled during lunch, after work and on Saturdays in an effort to reach the most number of employees, residents and downtown visitors. Summer on the Plaza functions include games, food trucks, roller skating and more. Beginning June 15 free Wi-Fi is available and powered by DSI.

Picnic on the Plaza happens every Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Aug. 27. Downtown employees are encouraged to pack a lunch or get a lunch to go from a downtown eatery and enjoy it outside.

Recess is Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through Sept. 7. Enjoy games of corn hole, giant scrabble, checkers and chess or the new bocce ball court.

Free yoga is every Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. through Aug. 29 with Akron Yoga & Wellness. In the event of rain, the class is inside Akron Yoga's studio on Mill Street in the Huntington Bank building.

Two new weekly leagues come to downtown in partnership with Stay in Play Recreation. Spikeball, a combination of foursquare and volleyball, and bocce ball is scheduled for Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 9. A Cascade Happy Hour from 4-8 p.m. (serving beer only) takes place on league nights. Outside of league play, the bocce courts are available to the public. Bocce sets are out during lunchtime recess or guests may bring their own sets.

On Fridays, the city of Akron's food truck Cascade Cucina returns from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. complete with live music each week from 12-1 p.m. The JSK Cafe also returns on Fridays at the John S. Knight Center plaza on Mill St. Both run through Aug 24.

Roller Dance Parties are the second Friday of the month from 8 to 10 p.m. through Aug. 3. Skating takes place on the concrete area around Cascade Plaza with a DJ, dancing and outdoor games on the grass. Roller skates are available to rent for $2 or guests may bring their own. A food truck and the Happy Camper Bar Car will be parked on the plaza with food and drink offerings (beer, cocktails, mocktails, soda and water).

Join instructor Christy Leenheer from Forever Fitness 24 for a free, hour-long Zumba class the first Saturday of every month through Sept. 1 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Guests are invited to stay after class for Blanket Brunches until 12 p.m. and enjoy food available for purchase from Sweet Mary's Bakery and Stray Dog Cart along with Bloody Mary's and Mimosas.

In addition to the activities on Cascade Plaza, live music in other areas of downtown is scheduled during lunch hours.

Amp it UP brings live music to the main library amphitheater every Tuesday from 12 to 1 p.m. through Aug. 28. This series is possible through support from Brennan Manna Diamond, Chase, Chemstress Consulting, FirstEnergy, Metisentry, Niekamp Weisensell Mutersbaugh & Mastrantonio and Wells Fargo.

Sidewalk Stage returns for a fourth year to the corner of Main & Cedar Streets and is sponsored by Pritt Entertainment Group. Enjoy live music every Thursday from 12 to 1 p.m. through Aug. 23.
