Tactile: New Directions in Textile features work inspired by the utilization of textiles in individual art practices while investigating dynamic materials from three Northeast Ohio artists, Megan Young, Lizzie Essi and Nyki Fetterman. Weavings, sculptures, rugs, drawings and objects guide the viewer from material to transcendent ideas of contemporary femininity, joy and nuanced exploration. These artists employ new manners of crafting with textile arts, such as combining installation and weaving or creating images that resemble quilted pattern. Young, Essi and Fetterman divulge from traditional textile materials to reflect contemporary languages of material. As noted from editor of Vitamin T: Contemporary Textiles, “Fiber carries in its substantive properties the revolutionary imprint of feminist and experimental pliability that both defines and de-centralizes the legacy of textiles in fine art spaces.” In Tactile, one sees three versions of powerful feminist art making, but also the joy and celebration of female and domestic materials.
