Ohio Contemporary Ballet, formerly Verb Ballets, returns to EJ Thomas Hall with a program that bridges generations, featuring masterpieces by iconic pioneers Paul Taylor and Heinz Poll with 21st-century visionary choreographers. Critics have described the company’s performances as “spellbinding”. Heinz Poll’s Adagio for Two never loses its luster in its portrayal of sculptural poses and meticulous partnering, which give the dancers a deity-like quality. The company is honored to present Paul Taylor’s Airs (1978), celebrated for its “astounding lyricism and breathtaking beauty” and performed to the timeless music of G.F. Handel, showcasing the dancers’ exceptional technique and seamless movement. Nycole Ray’s Opaque exudes a mysterious and majestic aura, delving into hidden depths with dramatic choreography and the striking visual of flowing black skirts. Her emotionally intense work has been featured at the prestigious International Black Dance Festival in Vienna and captures the trials of contemporary life. The company will present the world premiere of choreographer Avree Walker’s dynamic fusion of contemporary techniques and captivating lyricism, showcasing his unparalleled ability to craft compelling, narrative-driven movement with smooth fluidity. This captivating program celebrates the evolution of choreography, blending bold voices, tradition, and beauty into an unforgettable evening of deep artistry.
