Bishop Joey Johnson will echo and discuss the meaning of Dr. King's 1966 statement about health and explore what healthcare in the USA looks like today. He asks,"Health or Healthcare?"
On March 25, 1966, in Chicago at a press conference before his speech at the second convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights (MCHR), Dr. King said:
“We are concerned about the constant use of federal funds to support this most notorious expression of segregation. Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman because it often results in physical death.”
On the eve of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2022, hear Bishop Johnson expound on this historic message from Dr. King.
Presiding Bishop of Beth-El Fellowship of Visionary Churches, he is also the organizer and Senior Pastor of The House of the Lord. Bishop Johnson chairs the City of Akron Racial Equity and Social Justice Taskforce.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture is sponsored by the Akron Summit County Public Library and the Eta Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The event is free.
This program is in person at the Main Library Auditorium. Some programs may transition between virtual and in person due to evolving guidelines from health officials. Please contact the library to confirm the details.
