From Renaissance masterpieces to bold modern premieres, discover why the American Brass Quintet remains the most distinguished brass ensemble in the world today. The Akron program includes Pulitzer Prize and three-time Grammy winner Jennifer Higdon's Book of Brass, commissioned for ABQ by the late Dottie Hansen and her husband DuWayne. The concert is dedicated to the Hansens, longtime friends of Tuesday Musical.
The American Brass Quintet is internationally recognized as one of the premier chamber music ensembles of our time. Unlike conventional brass quintets, ABQ’s bass voice is provided by a bass trombone rather than a tuba. The quintet has served as ensemble-in-residence at the Aspen Music Festival and School since 1970 and at the Juilliard School since 1987.
“The most distinguished” of brass quintets (American Record Guide), the group has earned its stellar reputation through celebrated performances, genre-defining commissioned works, and ongoing commitment to the education of generations of musicians. Since its founding in 1960, ABQ has performed on 5 continents, made nearly 60 recordings, and premiered more than 150 contemporary works for brass.
