Young at HeART: Explore Arts and Aging at Akron ArtWalk on June 10

Akron, OHIO (May 31, 2022) — On June 10, explore the intersection of arts and aging at Summit Artspace and participating venues in the Historic Arts District.

By 2030, seniors will account for more than 30% of Summit County’s total population. Aging creatively is one of the best ways we can improve our quality of life and help make Akron and Summit County more livable for people of all ages, especially older adults.

Summit Artspace will be open from 4-9 p.m. Resident artists will welcome visitors into their studios and pop-up vendors will sell their handmade art throughout the building. Galleries will be open for visitors to walk through current exhibitions. A portion of Summit Street will be closed so that local artist Care Hanson can lead an outdoor intergenerational mandala-making activity. The Summit Artspace parking lot will host food vendors and musicians, including a rousing performance of “oldies” from the 60s through the 90s by Rubber City Ukes from 4-6 p.m. Media sponsor 91.3 The Summit will stream the station’s broadcast in the 2nd Floor Gallery, and information will be available about Summit County’s new “Age Friendly” initiative and the County’s recently completed needs assessment.

The Akron-Summit County Public Library Downtown Branch will be open until 7 p.m. and presenting its Urban Homesteading Sustainability Expo. Enjoy live music by the Bluestones and local guides on a range of topics in the art of living local—from apiculture (beekeeping) to zymurgy (the study of fermentation, as used in mead and beer).

The Akron Art Museum will be open to the public free of charge from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

The Nightlight Cinema will be showing The Tsugua Diaries at 5:30 p.m. and Neptune Frost at 7:45 p.m.

In the Northside District, the Northside Cellar will be open until 5 p.m. and Zeber-Martell Gallery and Clay Studio will be open until 6 p.m.

From 4-8 p.m., Curated Storefront will host Spray Play: An Art “Crawl” Event at Outside The Box, located at 110 N. Main St. Curated Storefront will reveal an original mural titled Stardust by international artist El Mac. Stardust will be on view to the public during the event and following the event. Those who attend will enjoy a fun afternoon of music, art viewing, and art making! Participants will make and take their own “baby-themed” spray paint artwork inspired by the mural’s content. Curated Storefront’s Clayton Bailey World of Wonders is also open from 4-8 p.m. at The University of Akron Polsky Building, located at 225 S. High St.

Musica will present Failed Astronauts, Deep Sigh, So Nectar, and Sister Sandy—doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 8 p.m.

Visit the City of Akron Rubber Worker Statue at 22 E. Mill St. Representatives will show visitors how to use the touchscreen kiosk, answer questions about the project, and sell merchandise.

The Bluff Blue Door Gallery, located at 152 Bluff St., will have an opening from 5-7 p.m. First-year painting students investigate how passing moments can be portrayed in both suggestive and literal ways, while also exploring the existence of ephemerality. The paintings investigate the intersections between the passage of time and the preservation of moments.

Parking for ArtWalk will be available in the lot between Summit Street and Broadway Street (43 S. Broadway St.), accessible from Mill Street (but not Market Street).

ArtWalk is supported, in part, by a grant from the Mary S. and David C. Corbin Foundation.
