Winter on the Boardwalk

Downtown Akron Partnership invites pedestrians and cyclists to embrace the season with unique ice sculptures in downtown Akron

Downtown visitors, employees and residents will have the opportunity to enjoy three weeks of ice sculptures in varying themes as part of Downtown Akron Partnership’s Winter on the Boardwalk. The exhibit runs Jan. 10-30 at the Diamond Boardwalk, the walkway between Canal Park Stadium and Cilantro on S. Main Street.

Winter on the Boardwalk is intended to showcase a whimsical and entertaining winter installation before or after visiting dining and retail destinations at the Main and Exchange Street area. This project is possible through support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

“Getting out and embracing the season is more difficult this time of year, so we’re happy to provide a little something special for wintertime visitors,” said Kelli Fetter, Downtown Akron Partnership’s director of engagements and events. ”We are excited to showcase these sculptures and add outdoor, cold weather fun to the downtown experience.”

The ice sculptures, created by Elegant Ice Creations, are placed every Thursday afternoon. Lighting and music is provided by Lost Tribe Media to enhance the display and create a welcoming atmosphere. The Diamond Boardwalk is accessible from Main Street and the Towpath Trail either on foot or bicycle.

A sneak peek was provided to guests at Lock 3 from Jan. 5-9 with sculptures representing Akron icons like The Goodyear Blimp, a Soap Box Derby car, Quaker Oats, a rubber tire and The University of Akron’s mascot, Zippy.  Visit Downtown Akron Partnership’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels for the theme each week or visit downtownakron.com.
