Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture curator to speak at Akron Art Museum
The Akron Art Museum will host a talk by Dr. Tuliza Fleming, curator of American Art at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. The talk is free and open to all.
Dr. Fleming will speak about AfriCOBRA artist Jeff Donaldson, accompanying a retrospective of Donaldson’s work on view at the Akron Art Museum in Jeff Donaldson: Dig. She will also talk about her instrumental role in building the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s American art collection.
Dr. Tuliza Fleming has served as the lead curator for the exhibition Visual Art and the American Experience and co-curated Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment. Her publications include “Visual Art and the American Experience: Creating an Art Gallery in a History and Culture Museum,” “Cover Stories: The Fusion of Art and Literature During the Harlem Renaissance,” “The Convergence of Aesthetics, Politics and Culture: Jeff Donaldson’s Wives of Shango,” and Breaking Racial Barriers: African American Portraits in the Harmon Foundation Collection.
