METRO RTA to Offer Free Rides to COVID-19 Vaccination Appointments

Friday, March 26, 2021, Akron, Ohio — In light of the recent expansion of COVID-19 vaccine eligibility, METRO is making it easier for persons to access vaccination appointments through a partnership with the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Rides for Community Immunity program.

Beginning Monday, March 29, METRO will provide free transportation to and from COVID-19 vaccination appointments on all services, including fixed-route, demand response, and Northcoast Express.

Digital or printed proof of a same-day, scheduled COVID-19 vaccine appointment is required to receive free fares.

“Transportation should never be a barrier when it comes to accessing medical appointments, and we want to ensure all persons have an opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” said METRO CEO Dawn Distler. “This is a crucial step to help us move forward and conquer the pandemic.”

ODOT’s Rides for Community Immunity program provided a total of $327,060 to METRO, granting the opportunity to work with local health and emergency management agencies to identify the best way to use these funds. METRO is grateful to be a recipient of the grant, which helps to further ensure the safety of its team and community members.
