METRO Regional Transit Authority to celebrate 50th birthday on August 14

In August of 1969, the newly created Akron Metropolitan Regional Transit Authority successfully restored public transportation to the city of Akron. Fifty years later, METRO is ready to celebrate its birthday with members of the community.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate 50 years of providing public transportation in Akron and Summit County,” commented Molly Becker, director of public relations & marketing. “We’ve come so far in the world of public transportation and I know we all look forward to seeing what the next 50 years has is store.”

METRO’s 50th Birthday Party will be Wednesday, August 14, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Robert K Pfaff Transit Center, 631 S. Broadway St, Akron. The public is invited to join in birthday festivities for all ages. There will be giveaways and prizes (while supplies last), entertainment, a community vendor fair and more. There will also be a Touch-A-Bus, where folks can explore every type of bus in METRO’s fleet. Attendees will also be able to admire works by local artists inside the art gallery on wheels, aka the METRO bus.

As a bonus, METRO is gifting free rides on all of its services that same day.
