“Great Streets Initiative” LED Streetlight Installation Event at University of Akron

Akron, Ohio, January 30, 2020—Please plan to join Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan, University of Akron President Gary Miller and Ohio Edison President Edward Shuttleworth for important updates on the South Exchange Street Corridor LED streetlighting project.

This neighborhood is part of the City of Akron’s ‘Great Streets Initiative’ and the first of 252 LED streetlights will be installed nearby right after this news conference Monday morning. In other FirstEnergy utility areas, neighborhoods have seen as much as a 10% reduction in crime and a 25% reduction in serious crime after LED streetlights were installed.

The South Exchange Street Corridor is the second of 10 Akron neighborhoods scheduled to receive this upgrade as part of the city’s Great Streets Initiative. LED streetlighting improves both safety and the perception of safety in our neighborhoods. Please plan to join us for this milestone event.
