Downtown Akron Partnership Announces the Return of Roller Skating Events to Cascade Plaza

June 7, 2022, Akron, Ohio — Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) will host roller skating events on Cascade Plaza as part of Summer on the Plaza, DAP’s free fitness and recreation programming offered to all from now through September.

These skating events will be held over five weekends in June, July, and August, and will be broken into two distinctive categories: Phuture Boogie Skate Nights with professional DJs Forrest “Getumgump” Webb and Darrell Stout, featuring decade-related themes; and Family Skate Nights, where families can come for a movie-themed skate on Cascade Plaza before heading to Lock 3 for Family Movie Night.

Phuture Boogie Skate events were created by Webb, Stout, and Andre Leone to capture the feeling of popular Soul Skate events in other communities. DAP has added a twist to the Phuture Boogie Skate parties with decade-related theme nights, in which visitors are encouraged to dress in their flashiest 70s, 80s, 90s, or 2000s gear.

DAP Director of Engagement and Events Elizabeth Flanagan says, “The skating events are a great way to spend summer evenings with friends and family. The fun atmosphere created on the plaza accompanied by great food, drinks, and music won’t let anyone down if they’re looking for something fun to do downtown.”

Phuture Boogie Skate Nights are scheduled for Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m., and Family Skate Nights are scheduled for Sundays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Skates will be available to rent for $2/pair, and food and drinks will be available for purchase from The Shed. All are welcome to attend—even those who are not interested in skating, as there will be a dance party on the interior of the “rink.”
