City of Akron Renews its Electric Aggregation Program

Energy Harbor of Akron will be electric provider for the next four years

Akron, Ohio, March 4, 2021 — The City of Akron has successfully renewed its electric aggregation program, with generation that is 100% carbon-free. Following a competitive bid process, the City selected Energy Harbor’s fixed generation price of 4.97 cents/kWh, which will be applied to customer bills beginning May of 2021 and remain in place through May of 2025.

In November 2001, the Akron community first voted in favor of government aggregation. Under government aggregation, local officials bring citizens together to gain group buying power for the purchase of competitively priced electricity from a retail electric generation supplier certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).  Every three to four years, the City collects competitive bids to decide on a supplier for the subsequent cycle.

Headquartered in Akron, Energy Harbor has more than 200 community aggregation programs and serves nearly one million residential, commercial and industrial customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois and Michigan.

“We’re pleased to partner with Energy Harbor on electric aggregation for the next four years,” said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. “First and foremost, they are clearly committed to providing truly carbon-free generation at competitive rates for our citizens. We also appreciate the fact that Energy Harbor’s corporate base is in Akron and the majority of the company’s power generation is located in Ohio, along with a large percentage of the company employees. Whenever possible, I want to keep Ohio money, and Ohio jobs, in the state.”

In March, Akron residents and small businesses will receive a letter from the City and Energy Harbor with information about the aggregation program, including terms and conditions. As part of the agreement, requested by the City of Akron, the generation will be supplied by 100% carbon-free sources. Plus, there are no early termination fees so customers can leave the program at any time without penalty.

To join or remain in the aggregation program, no action is required.  If you do not wish to participate, the Energy Harbor letter provides three easy ways to opt out – phone, mail or web. The Energy Harbor contract also provides an alternative option of 1% off the Ohio Edison price to compare (or default utility price) for any residential or small business customer who would prefer this type of savings program.

For additional information about the electric aggregation program customers can call Energy Harbor at 1-866-636-3747, Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
