City of Akron Announces Plans for Neighborhood-Based Fourth of July Fireworks

Akron, Ohio, June 15, 2020 – Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan has announced plans for Fourth of July fireworks displays throughout the city that will allow spectators to remain at a safe distance from others. The Office of Integrated Development has organized a synchronized program of fireworks, sponsored by the Akron RubberDucks, to be launched from the Akron Executive Airport, Patterson Park Ballfields, Summit Lake, and the State Street Parking Deck in Downtown Akron. A perimeter around these sites will be secured, and spectators will not be allowed to park or walk close to the launching grounds. Instead, individuals and families are strongly encouraged to watch from their own home or neighborhood and enjoy the fireworks from a distance. Residents should ensure minimum 6ft separation from others and wear facial coverings if leaving their property or car at any time during the display.

In partnership with WONE and the Rubber City Radio Group, spectators can share in a patriotic soundtrack for the program, no matter where they are, by tuning their radios to 97.5 FM.

The show will begin promptly at 9:45PM, Saturday July 4th, 2020, with test shots being fired at 8:30PM, 9:00PM, and 9:30PM. The test shots will help residents determine if they’ll be able to see the fireworks from where they are or if they’ll need to move to a different location.

“With so many summer activities on hold or cancelled this year, it was important that we were able to maintain one of our Fourth of July traditions,” said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. “These are trying times in our country, our state, and our city, and it’s important that we take a moment to celebrate and recommit to our highest national ideals. By spreading out our fireworks displays into our neighborhoods, we can create a safe way for our community to share a meaningful experience while preserving physical distance.”
