Burgess & Niple Relocates to Bowery District

October 3, 2023, Akron, OH — The Bowery District is now home to Burgess & Niple (B&N), a civil engineering firm whose infrastructure projects have improved water quality, enhanced transportation safety, and reduced traffic congestion in the Akron area for more than 50 years. The firm’s 17 employees moved into their new space at 164 S. Main Street over the summer and are enjoying the office’s updated amenities and beautiful view of Lock 4.

50+ Years of Akron Infrastructure Design

Prior to opening its first Akron office in 1972, the national engineering firm served the City of Akron for more than a decade. Since that time B&N has made significant contributions to the area’s infrastructure. Their first project was the Ohio Canal Enclosure that was constructed in the heart of the Cascade Development. In 2000, B&N’s bridge team designed the replacement bridge on Mill Street over the CSX railroad. And, in 2010 the firm assisted with the asbestos abatement at the Landmark Building, which is next door to their new Main Street office. The firm also prepared complete plans for the reconstruction of the Central Interchange area to rebuild portions of I-76, I-77 and SR 8.

One of B&N’s more recent local projects was the design of improvements to the Akron Water Reclamation Facility (WRF). The WRF’s award-winning Biologically Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment (BioCEPT) system was one of the first of its kind in the nation. The design increased the amount of wet weather wastewater the WRF could treat during storm events, reducing sewer overflow into the Cuyahoga River and improving the river’s water quality.

Connecting with the Community

Located at the storefront level, the firm is now more accessible and visible to the community and downtown area. External signage with QR codes were installed near the entrance to connect the community to some of the firm’s local projects. Additional branding was incorporated throughout the space, while retaining some of the pre-1900s former furniture store’s characteristics, resulting in a modern and functional space for employees.

“Staff and visitors have all exclaimed that our office has a ‘cool’ vibe, from the tall tin ceilings on the main floor to the combination of historic and modern features on our lower level,” according to Dan Johnson, who leads B&N’s Akron office. “This is not typical office space! Everyone loves our patio and deck that overlook the Ohio and Erie Canalway and the Lock 4 park.”

In August, B&N celebrated 50+ years of service in the Akron area and the move to their new space with an open house event. “It was amazing to be able to share our new home with clients and staff while celebrating such an important milestone,” Dan said. “We look forward to serving the Akron community for years to come from this vibrant new space.”
