Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation Appoints New Chairman

Akron, Ohio, February 9, 2021 – The Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation elected Atty. Charles L. Greene as its chairman. Greene succeeds the late Judge James R. Williams, founder and first chairman.

“Judge Williams’ leadership is sorely missed, but I’m honored to continue his legacy through the important work of the foundation that he created,” said Greene.

Led by Williams in 1988, the Foundation was created by the Eta Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It provides financial assistance to non-profit organizations who provide services and support focusing on the minority community in the greater Akron area.

“We typically provide assistance to help the low-income, seniors, families, and children in our community.  Our goal is to provide support where we can make a difference in people’s lives,” said Greene.

Greene is currently CEO of Tomorrow’s People, Inc., a consulting firm based in Akron.  He is also emeritus vice president of human resources at Kent State University. He received his J.D. and B.A. from the University of Akron. He also received his M.S.W. from the University of Pittsburgh.

At its January meeting, the Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation awarded three organizations with funding. Organizations receiving grants were:

  • Haven of Rest: $1,500.00 for food and housing for the homeless during the pandemic and summer months.
  • iN Education: $1,500.00 to support the Akron Public Schools’ Battle of the Teal Arts Program promoting visual and performing arts from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • University of Akron’s Black Male Summit:  $5,000.00 to support an increase in black male college acceptance, retention and graduation rates.

The Foundation accepts and awards requests throughout the year. Non-profits serving the target population should submit their requests to:
