This federally designated historic corridor extending 110 miles from Lake Erie and downtown Cleveland to New Philadelphia, Ohio is a historical, cultural, economic and recreational backbone to Downtown’s renaissance. The Towpath Trail is one of the main features of the corridor. The historic canal passes directly through downtown Akron and has evolved into a tourist destination and people magnet as well as foundation for an entertainment and retail corridor. It is central to the redevelopment of the O’Neil’s Block.

Lock I – improvement of the east side of the Ohio & Erie Canal between Exchange and Cedar Streets has been completed. A $530,000 investment led to the creation of a multipurpose trail, landscaping, benches, lighting and access stairs to Orleans Avenue.
