This concert features UA students, faculty, and staff performing Gounod’s Funeral March of a Marionette, Deussen’s A Field in Pennsylvania, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor “From the New World”.
The Symphony Orchestra is one of the pinnacle ensembles of music education and performance. Its talented musicians are devoted to their art and the pursuit of musical excellence. As an important component of Akron’s music scene, the UA Orchestra enlivens both the UA campus and Akron community with their performances.
About the Director of Orchestras, Matthew Jenkins Jaroszewicz
Matthew Jenkins Jaroszewicz is in his second year as Director of Orchestras at the University of Akron. Previously, he spent eight years with the Canton Symphony Orchestra, serving as Assistant and Associate Conductor before becoming Music Director in 2024. He is also in his tenth season as Conductor of the Canton Youth Symphony Advanced Orchestra.He has conducted works by composers such as Mahler, Beethoven, Brahms, Price, and Shostakovich, and has collaborated with Grammy winners including Garrick Ohlsson and Terence Blanchard. From 2014 to 2017, he co-founded and directed Apotheosis Opera in New York, leading productions of Wagner, Puccini, and Strauss.Matthew holds degrees from Brown University and Mannes College of Music. He lives in Cleveland with his husband, Andrew Teague McCollister, and their dog, Pappy.
