Every seasoned Akronite is familiar with the courthouse lions - two massive, 8-ton guardians that have stood watch for more than a century. But behind those limestone sentinels lies a history far richer than most passersby ever imagine.
Journey with the Honorable Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer on an exclusive tour of this architectural masterpiece, from its unlikely beginnings at McDonald's, not the golden arches but McDonald’s Tavern that once stood at the northeast corner of Main and Exchange streets, to the "gore" gifted by Simon Perkins.
Along the way you’ll be regaled with tales of the chance dedication of the first courthouse by “Old Man Eloquent” and 6th President of the United States, John Quincy Adams, the fierce battle for the county seat, and how ice played a role in transforming the courthouse promenade not once - but twice!
Beneath the Italian Renaissance Revival design and locally quarried sandstone, Judge Stormer will reveal the tales that truly bring this historic landmark to life.
The lions may guard the doors, but it's the stories inside that roar the loudest.
