About the Exhibits

East to West is the first public exhibition of the Charles and Lucy Voris Baird Collection in 40 years, spotlighting pieces from China, Japan, and modern-day Thailand. The collection includes 13th - 15th century Thai pottery, Japanese prints by the masters Hiroshige and Hokusai, Japanese leather shadow puppets, and blue and white Chinese porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties. East to West is curated by students in the Museums and Archives Studies and Public Humanities Certificate Programs.

Tidal Pool by Myers School of Art student Ashley Strub is prompted by the nature of reality and the steady facets of interiors, space, and landscapes. Strub uses substrates of varying states of transparency and various conventional materials to attest to the metaphysical aspects of existence and certainty.

Ultramarine by Myers School of Art student Charles Reed explores marine biology, symbology, and atmospheric worldbuilding. In the work, light reveals and shrouds information, and implies that the paintings have unseen features. Viewers are invited to explore settings that tow a line between familiar and otherworldly.
