Formed in 1985 by several WRUW (College Radio) DJ’s and local musicians. DOAS started out as a collective of Musical-Noise –merchants and fun seeking exhibitionists. After several local pick-up gigs the now three-piece band set off to the legendary Beatfarm studios to make a four-song cassette only release “Steam”
With the release of “Steam,” a four-song EP cassette in 1985, the band gathered momentum with press, and much needed radio airplay with their send up cover version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir.” They also received positive reviews of the cassette in Option Magazine, which garnered notices from several small indie labels on both sides of the Atlantic.
The band soon became a four piece- with the addition of Andrew Klimek and John Spuzzillo, joining the ranks of Marky Ray and Tina Lefauve- This line-up really began pushing the musical limits of Jazz/Noise/Experimentation, leading to a number of crucial gigs in NYC that cemented the band’s reputation as a contender and contemporary of such bands as the Swans, Sonic Youth and Mofungo. Along the way playing prestigious gigs at Tin Pan Alley (with Krackhouse), CBGB’s (with Volcano Suns) and PS 122 (with The Scene is Now and Phantom Tollbooth) This line -up (Mach III) – lasted from 1985-86’ and made one (unreleased) LP – “Industrial Strength Jazz*”
In 1987, luck was on their side as the band managed to snag an opening slot for Butthole Surfers at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus Ohio. The ‘Surfers who were at the height of their powers touring on their “Locust Abortion Technician” Tour, welcomed the band as kindred spirits even calling them “weird”, a high compliment for sure. Marky Ray later went on to tour with Butthole Surfers and still enjoys a close friendship with the band to this day.
From 1987 to 1989 the band expanded and contracted a couple more times- making one last (unreleased) Live -2 track- in the studio- direct to master -LP as a three piece – (Ballast Resistors/ Dreams Of Contentment”) before finally calling it a day in 1989- their sole CD* “Industrial Strength Jazz” (a compilation of the band’s back catalog) came out 10 years later in 1999.
The band members have all carried on with music- Tina lives in Chicago and is an indie artist, street performer and busker. John recently returned to Cleveland after working for many years as a musician in New Orleans. Andrew spent a number of years performing with John Morton’s reformed X _Blank _ X, and Marky has continued to work as solo artist and on occasion sits in and performs with local legends the Walking Clampetts, among others.
