Take on a Chess Grandmaster in a Simultaneous Chess Match
November 15, 2022, Akron, Ohio — Ever wanted to try your hand at one of those chess matches in which 20 or more people play one master at the same time? Sunday, November 20, 2022 from 2 – 4 pm is your chance to see if you’ve got the right moves. Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) will present a simultaneous chess exhibition with Grandmaster Alexander Shabalov, managed by Discovery Chess, at Northside Marketplace in which the Grandmaster will take on up to 25 different opponents at the same time. Shabalov is a four-time winner of the United States Chess Championship and recently won the title of 2022 Senior Champion at the U.S. National Championships in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2015, he was inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame, and is known for an uncompromising, attacking style of play. He even has an opening move named after him: The Shabalov-Shirov gambit, named after himself and Alexei Shirov, with whom he developed the strategy.
Additional games and chess tables will be available at Northside Marketplace for friendly play. The marketplace will be open for shopping and food is available for purchase from NOMZ, and snacks and decadent sweets are available from Essential Dipped Delights.
