City of Akron to Resume Bulk Pickup Services on June 8th

Akron, Ohio, June 1, 2020 – As the City of Akron continues to move forward in the next phases of the COVID-19 response, the City will be transitioning back to full operations for sanitation customers, including bulk pick up.  Bulk pickup includes any items outside a customer’s normal trash cart on the customer’s normal collection day. Three pickups are provided free to residents as part of the City’s regular sanitation services.

At his afternoon Town Hall, Mayor Dan Horrigan announced that, as of today, the City has resumed taking requests to the 3-1-1 Mayor’s Action Center (311 or 375-2311) for bulk pickup service over the week of June 8-12 and for the following week of June 15-19. The City is asking residents to call and schedule pickups for ALL ITEMS that will be outside of the carts to ensure that the City is able to appropriately handle the volume of items being discarded, as we transition back to full services.

“With residents spending more time at home, and with this being the normal ‘spring cleaning’ season, we know there is quite a bit of extra trash and large items residents would like to discard,” Mayor Dan Horrigan said.  “We are happy to be able to offer this service again, and we thank the citizens of Akron for their patience while we temporarily paused bulk pickup for the safety and health of our staff.  The most important message today, is that we are asking residents to call 311 to schedule their pickup in advance.  This will help us provide the most efficient bulk pickup services in our neighborhoods and keep our curbs clean.”

“Finally, as we continue to navigate these challenging times, I encourage all Akron residents who are looking to discard unwanted items to first consider donating those goods to local charities that are in need of clean, gently used items.  Choosing to donate your high quality household goods can help our neighbors in need,” Mayor Horrigan added.

The City is reminding customers not to place items on the curb any earlier than 4:30 PM on the evening prior to their scheduled collection day, or fines may be issued. Residents should also review the guidelines for the kinds of items that the City accepts through the bulk pickup program, available at www.akronohio.gov/trash.  Unacceptable items for bulk collection include: construction and demolition materials, roofing materials, plaster, dirt, sand, gravel, bricks, drywall, hazardous waste, paint, motor oil, auto fluids, flammable liquids, chemicals, bleach, auto parts, matches, concrete and cement. Limbs, branches, carpeting and fencing must also be bundled, tied and no longer than 4 feet in length. For any questions please call 311 or 375-2311.
