University of Akron Fall Enrollment Jumps 5% With Largest Freshman Class

Final fall enrollment numbers at UA show nearly 5 percent gain from 2009, largest freshman class in history

The University of Akron’s strong enrollment growth in the last five years has continued in 2010, according to the official fall semester figures released by UA to the Ohio Board of Regents. Enrollment is up 4.8 percent over the tally from last year, marking the fifth straight year that enrollment has increased at UA and the largest enrollment at the university since 1991.

The University is also reporting the largest freshman class in its 140-year history – 4,796 freshman enrolled this fall, a 5.6 percent increase from fall 2009.

UA’s 14-day enrollment figures show the total number of students at the University to start the fall semester is 29,251, up from 27,911 after 14 days in fall 2009. Student credit hours are up 17,004 credit hours from 326,123 last fall, an increase of 5.2 percent.

The new enrollment figures, which are outpacing many other state and regional universities, are a testament to the ongoing transformation at the University – both academically and physically, says Dr. Charles J. Fey, vice president of student affairs.

“This is an excellent growth trend and demonstrates the important role The University of Akron plays in educating the future leaders and researchers of tomorrow in Northeast Ohio and beyond,” Fey said. “We are excited by this growth, not only on the main campus in Akron but at Wayne College and the Medina County University Center as well, and we look forward to the success of our students in this new academic year.”
