WYNTON MARSALIS TURNS 50! AS PART OF THE CELEBRATION, HE & JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA OPENS TUESDAY MUSICAL’S CONCERT SERIES ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2011
TUESDAY MUSICAL presents iconic jazz musician Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on Tuesday, September 20th at 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Hall, The University of Akron.
Wynton Marsalis, trumpeter, composer, educator and band leader, is one of the most visible and highly respected jazz artists today, building new audiences for America’s music – jazz! Under his direction, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) travels the world, performing repertoire whose breadth and scope embraces the entire jazz spectrum - from the music’s New Orleans roots to bebop and modern jazz. By creating and performing an expansive range of brilliant new music for quartets, big bands, chamber music ensembles, symphony orchestras, tap dance and ballet, Marsalis has expanded the vocabulary for jazz ; he has also created an essential body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers. To celebrate Marsalis’ 50th birthday, the JLCO will showcase the vast array of musical compositions for big band.
Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director
As jazz musician, trumpeter, composer, bandleader, advocate for the arts and educator, Wynton Marsalis has helped propel jazz to the forefront of American culture. His prominent position in American culture was solidified in April 1997, when he became the first jazz artist to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his work Blood on the Fields, which was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. With more than 30 jazz albums, nine Grammy Awards and the Pulitzer Prize, Marsalis continues to be a visionary and serves as both artistic director and music director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (formerly known as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) since its inception.
Jazz at Lincoln Center
In 1987 Wynton Marsalis co-founded a jazz program at Lincoln Center. In July 1996, due to its significant success, Jazz at Lincoln Center was installed as new constituent of Lincoln Center, equal in stature with the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, and New York City Ballet – a historic moment for jazz as an art form and for Lincoln Center as a cultural institution. In October 2004, with the assistance of a dedicated Board and staff, Marsalis opened Frederick P. Rose Hall, the world’s first institution for jazz. The complex contains three state-of-the-art performance spaces (including the first concert hall designed specifically for jazz) along with recording, broadcast, rehearsal and educational facilities. Jazz at Lincoln Center has become a preferred venue for New York jazz fans and a destination for travelers from throughout the world. Under Wynton’s leadership, Jazz at Lincoln Center has developed an international agenda presenting rich and diverse programming that includes concerts, debates, film forums, dances, television and radio broadcasts, and educational activities.
Jazz at Lincoln Center is a mecca for learning as well as a hub for performance. Its comprehensive educational programming includes a Band Director’s Academy, a hugely popular concert series for kids called Jazz for Young People, Jazz in the Schools, a Middle School Jazz Academy, WeBop! (for kids ages 8 months to 5 years), an annual High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival that reaches over 2000 bands in 50 states and Canada, and online learning tools
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, Chairman Lisa Schiff and Executive Director, Adrian Ellis, Jazz at Lincoln Center produces thousands of events each season in its home in New York City, Frederick P. Rose Hall, and around the world.

Tuesday Musical & Free Student Tickets
Tuesday Musical continues to present one of the finest concert series in the country. Founded in 1887, it has presented superstars, emerging artists, dance ensembles and opera. The one qualifier is Musical Excellence and that has been Tuesday Musical’s trademark for 124 years.
As cultural opportunities for students have diminished over the years, Tuesday Musical embarked on a multi-faceted Education Outreach Program that takes the musicians into the schools and provides students from middle school to university/college level free admission to its concerts at EJ Thomas Hall. Attending the concerts requires a student ticket voucher, and students may obtain a voucher one of two ways:
• Vouchers are sent to teachers at the beginning of each school year and a student can get one
that way or they can pick one up at the student ticket table in the ticket office lobby of E.J. Thomas Hall on the evening of a concert. The voucher is redeemable for a concert ticket at the student ticket table.
* If a large group of students are attending, the teacher needs to call the Tuesday Musical office, 330.761.3460, to make arrangements.
• Tuesday Musical will also cover the cost of bus transportation for schools bringing more than
20 students to any of the concerts or other education outreach opportunities it offers. This must be coordinated through the Tuesday Musical office, 330.761.3460.
* Parents/adults may purchase a companion seat for a reduced price and sit with students/children.
Pre-Concert Talk
There is a pre-concert talk by Jack Schantz, Coordinator of Jazz Studies at The University of Akron. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. in E.J. Thomas Hall, Schantz will cover a wide range of topics that reflect his lifelong passion for and involvement with jazz. This concert preview will provide an excellent entrée to your concert experience on September 20th, and it is free and open to any ticket holder.
