Symphony Music Director Discusses ‘Porgy and Bess’ at Main Library

‘A Backstage Tour’ explores the Akron Symphony’s production of the Gershwin classic

Christopher Wilkins, music director of the Akron Symphony, will speak about George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess at a free program at the Akron-Summit County Public Library Main Library Auditorium on Thursday, April 14, at noon. The maestro will share his insights into the music and history of Porgy and Bess and describe the Akron Symphony’s staged production in detail. The performances will feature a cast of international stars together with leading performers from Northeast Ohio.

“Our performances are already making history in Akron,” said Wilkins. “There are nearly 300 performers in our production. Porgy and Bess is a model of Americanism. Its themes are home-grown and its hopes and disappointments are a part of the American Dream. Its characters step right out of American history.”
