A new restaurant featuring soups and other slow-cooked meals has opened for business in downtown Akron.
The Stew Pot Kitchen is located at 30 North High Street and is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The restaurant, which touts its low prices, also serves up sandwiches, sausages, hot dogs and other cuisines.
Owner Scott Malensek said he has three rules: to have fun, to feed people and to make his business sustainable.
The former stay-at-home dad said he'd always fantasized about owning a business, but knew he would want to start out small. With his son heading off to school in the fall, Malensek, 41, said he felt the time was right for his adventure. ''Some people get a sports car; I got a soup kitchen,'' he said.
His prices are low — $1 for a hot dog, $3.50 for a 22-ounce bowl of his homemade soup. The eatery is opened Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call 330-376-STEW (7839).
