The dedication for Mrs. Rosa Parks, the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement, will be held Friday, March 5th, 2010 at 11 a.m. on Rosa Parks Drive, located between Main & Broadway – surrounding the new Metro Transit Center. The public is invited to come and witness history being made for this great lady.
City Council voted last month to name the service road Rosa Parks Drive. The service road, located between Broadway and High Street, north of Bartges Street, gives buses access to the one-way High Street and the transit center at 631 S. Broadway.
Ophelia Averitt, president of the Akron chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, had been pushing for Akron to recognize Parks.
Dave Lieberth, Akron's deputy mayor for administration, said the street across from the transit center seemed like the perfect tribute.
The dedication ceremony takes place during Women’s History Month. Two new signs have been erected on the road. The Metro Regional Transit Authority will hang a banner and prepare a display case with information about Parks and the civil-rights movement.
