The Farmers' Market at Lock 3 netted 18 entries in a hotly contested pickle-making contest Friday. Downtown Akron Partnership, which manages the market, gave out pickle-size cucumbers and pickling spices for two weeks in advance of the contest, urging recipients to work their magic to turn them into prize-winning pickles.
Contestants' pickle recipies ranged from "I just Googled pickles" to generations old secret family recipies.
The winners, in three categories, are:
Dill Pickles
First Place - Doreen Hazlett
Second Place - Michael Derr
Third Place - Peter Garver
Sweet Pickles
First Place - Val Kramer
Second Place - Suzie Graham
Third Place - Holly Mattucci
Other (other pickled vegetables)
First Place (tie) - Ben Rountree, Peter Garver
Third Place - Judie Hershey
Deputy Mayor Dave Lieberth, bailiff Dorrianne Denard and magistrate Alan Medvick judged the contest.

Pickle samples were also offered to passers by who could vote for "fan favorite."

The dill category was the most popular with 9 entries.

Fan favorite winner Suzie Graham samples the competition.
