Akron’s Historic ICE HOUSE

Northeast Ohio’s premier dance company has announced its fall concert schedule which will include the world premieres of two exciting new works by GroundWorks Artistic Director David Shimotakahara and GroundWorks Artistic Associate Amy Miller. The company will celebrate its 12th consecutive year at the historic Ice House on Akron’s Northside in September.
GroundWorks DanceTheater will present the world premiere of “Running to Earth,” a commissioned work by Miller in collaboration with composer Peter Swendsen, Assistant Professor of Computer Music and Digital Arts at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, as well as the world premiere of a piece by Shimotakahara with original music and video design by David Bird, a graduate student in Oberlin’s Technology in Music and Related Arts (TIMARA). Also on the program will be “Major to Minor” by Shimotakahara.
Miller is a founding member of GroundWorks and has choreographed for the company since 2006. She was named the Outstanding Artist in Dance by the Akron Area Arts Alliance in 2009 and her choreography earned a 2010 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award. Miller and Swendsen collaborated in 2009 to create “Valence,” hailed by critics as “a mysterious and striking creation.” (Donald Rosenberg, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Sept. 10, 2009) Miller has maintained close artistic ties to GroundWorks since moving from Cleveland to New York City in 2010.
The Ice House, part of the Northside Ice/Coal Factory Complex, is located at 129 North Summit Street (between Perkins and Furnace Streets) in Akron. Both the Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 concerts will begin at 7:00 pm.
