Green Fair and Green & Clean This Friday

A crowd will be gathering in Downtown this Friday for the Green Fair and Green & Clean Day!

Green Fair
Friday, May 7, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Lock 3

Green Fair at Lock 3 Park is for anyone who wants to learn more about environmentally friendly resources for the work place. Green & Clean Day is a giant spring cleaning project for Downtown’s streets, sidewalks, windows and more.

“We even have people volunteer to scrape gum off of the sidewalks,” said Kimberlee McKee, executive director of Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP). DAP is sponsoring Green & Clean.

Public radio station, 91.3 FM The Summit will broadcast live from Green Fair. In fact, "Summit" Music director Liz Mozzocco, will be multi tasking…picking up trash, and doing live cut-ins throughout the morning.

Green Fair will run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and feature equipment and ideas to promote environmentally sound practices and further the cause of the environment within the community.

If you have old cellular telephones or cell phone batteries, you can have them recycled at Green Fair, too. “One of the vendors, EnviroCellular, has offered to take the used phones and batteries and recycle them,” said DAP’s Event Coordinator Allyson Ford.

Green Fair gives businesses the opportunity to see and test the new green product lines of area vendors so that they might switch to using safer, less hazardous products and/or products that are recyclable, or recycled.

At Green Fair, vendors will display a variety of safe products available on the market and demonstrate how to use them. The event is designed to be as interactive as possible to increase the educational aspect of the program.

*We have reached maximum capacity for Green & Clean volunteers. Please be sure to stop by the Green Fair which is open to the public at Lock 3 from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Friday May, 7.

The annual Green & Clean Day involves several hundred volunteers---many, along with their employers---participating in cleaning and sprucing-up all Downtown Akron’s sidewalks and parking decks, painting fixtures in public gathering places, collecting litter, removing graffiti and even landscaping public areas such as Cascade Plaza and the Towpath Trail.

Last year, Green & Clean spruced up: 11 alleys; 11 bus shelters; 69 benches and picnic tables; 40 planters; 49 paper boxes; 89 tree grates; 179 parking meters, and swept 167 blocks of sidewalk. For details on Green & Clean Day, go to: www.downtownakron.com/greenandclean.
