The public is invited to Summit Artspace Gallery on Friday, April 30 from 5-7 pm, for a meet-the-artists reception to celebrate the opening of the Fresh Art exhibition. This annual juried show challenges area artists to flex their creative muscles by creating new work that reflects novel thinking, original styles and interesting materials.
Summa Foundation sponsored prizes of $500, $300 and $200 for the top three winners, who will be announced at the opening. This year’s judges are Clare Murray-Adams and John T. Adams. Murray-Adams, a professor of art at Canton’s Malone University, is also an artist working in collage, mixed media construction, encaustic paint and fiber. Her husband is a painter and sculptor. The judges also selected the works included in the show.
Summit Artspace, a project of the Akron Area Arts Alliance in cooperation with Summit County government, is located in a historic building at 140 E. Market St., one block east of the Akron Art Museum. This is the gallery’s sixth Fresh Art exhibit. The show attracts artworks in a wide variety of media by young, emerging artists, arts educators and established artists.
Regular gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday 12-5 pm. Admission and Parking are free. The gallery will also be open 12-9 pm on May 1 as part of the Downtown Akron Artwalk. Fresh Art will be on display through June 5.
