Published on Tuesday, Apr 13, 2010

A tai chi and qigong instructor will lead a free class of breathing and moving exercises from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 24 at Lock 3 in downtown Akron.

The event is part of World Tai Chi and Qigong Day, an international effort to promote wellness worldwide.

The exercises will be led by certified instructor Nancy Gardner, who teaches classes for Summa Health System.

Tai chi and qigong (pronounced ''chee-gung'') are exercises used for relaxation, reducing and managing stress and increasing strength, flexibility and balance.

The program is sponsored by Gardner, NG Energy and the city of Akron.

The event will take place outdoors, weather permitting. Otherwise, the program will be held indoors at the Lock 3 commons.

Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair.
