AKRON, Ohio (July 22, 2009) – The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Center at Akron Children’s Hospital opened its doors July 20 to provide services exclusively to infants, children and teens in northeast Ohio.

Under the direction of Anton Milo, MD, DDS, the center’s physicians will provide diagnostic evaluation and treatment for a wide range of conditions related to the head and neck, including hearing loss, chronic ear infections, sinus and nasal procedures, head and neck tumors and congenital masses.

Sam Albert, MD, joins Dr. Milo in the practice and Marc Nelson, MD, will join them in July 2010, after completing a fellowship in pediatric ENT.

“The ENT Center is going to be a great resource for children in our hospital’s 25-county region,” Dr. Milo said. “We will focus exclusively on pediatrics and, in time, we will be able to offer services that currently don’t exist in our area.”

The ENT Center will occupy 10,000 square feet in Akron Children’s William H. Considine Professional Building, 215 W. Bowery St., on Akron Children’s main campus. The center will include eight exam rooms, four treatment rooms, two audiology booths, radiology equipment and a dedicated center for hearing aid sales and service.

Ear-tube insertion and tonsil/adenoid removal are among the most commonly performed surgeries at Akron Children’s and other pediatric hospitals nationwide.

“A hospital-based center of this type is able to foster research and education,” said Dr. Milo. “Eventually, we will be able to provide additional services, such as head and neck surgery, cochlear implants and multi-disciplinary complex airway management for patients who are born with serious airway problems or acquire problems through illness or injury.”

Dr. Milo anticipates that the new center will improve access to services for some families in northeast Ohio, particularly children in communities such as Medina, Hudson and Stow.

“We believe in access, quality of care and communication,” Dr. Milo said. “We are very excited to develop a strong pediatric subspecialty program in ENT at Akron Children’s and take care of the needs of all the children in our region.”

All major insurance plans and Medicaid are accepted.
