February 7, 2010
Make downtown Akron your destination on Sunday, February 7, 2010 as the Akron Art Museum, along with the Akron-Summit County Public Library and Summit Artspace, present a full schedule of free programs and activities for Sunday Sampler.
The Akron Art Museum will be open from 11 am to 5 pm, offering free gallery admission. February 7 will be the first Free Sunday that audiences can view the much anticipated exhibition Pattern ID. Also on view are the soon-to-close exhibitions The Legend of John Brown and Nuclear Enchantment: Photographs by Patrick Nagatani. For family fun, drop by the lobby from 12 – 3 pm to participate in a variety of art activities in preparation for the Chinese New Year – February 14, 2010 begins the Year of the Tiger! Also, enjoy an interactive performance by the Cleveland Chinese Musical Ensemble from 3 – 4 pm in the auditorium. Learn about traditional Chinese music, learn to play Chinese gongs, drums and cymbals, and join in on some songs for a performance finale.
Akron-Summit County Public Library, directly across the street from the museum, will be open from 1 to 5 pm. Enjoy John F. Seiberling: Through His Lens – Garden Trio Corridor. Throughout the day, teens can visit the third floor Teen Division for Crafts to Go projects and families with young children can enjoy Sunday Story Time Sampler in the Children’s Library at 2 pm. Also, don’t miss the Getting Started in Family History exhibit on view in the Special Collections department.
Summit Artspace, located two blocks east of the museum at the corner of Market and Summit, is open from 11 am to 5 pm and will feature 1° of Change, a photography and encaustic painting show by Bradley Hart and Nancy Richards-Davis in the Big BOX Gallery. Richards-Davis will be demonstrating encaustic painting from 1 – 3 pm. Also on view in the Small BOX Gallery (3rd floor) is Gwen Waight’s re-collect show of found art assemblages.
Free trolley transportation to the three venues will be provided by the City of Akron. In a continuous loop, the trolley will stop at the main entrances of the museum and Summit Artspace and the High Street entrance of the library.
