Demolition sets stage for new housing downtown

The building that housed Jillian's in downtown Akron is history.  Wrecking crews brought down the structure to make way for new private student housing.

Developer Marty Mehall of Richland Communities, Ltd. of Middleburgh Heights will invest $35 million to build student housing in the block bounded by Main, High, Exchange and Cedar streets.

A move-in date of August of 2009 is planned.

Plans for retail space on the first floor of the four-story units along South Main Street is also in the works.

The historic Howe House, currently on the corner of Exchange and High streets will be moved to the banks of the canal on the corner of Exchange and Water streets.  The building at 12 E. Exchange is the only structure that will remain.
