On Sept. 10, more than 200 Summit County citizens participated in the creation of the ninth annual 9/11 Remembrance Art Project, “Free Standing.”
The community art project was created in the first floor lobby of the Ohio Building, located at 175 S. Main St.
Citizens participated by signing and/or scripting a message onto a 6-foot wooden peace pole with red or blue markers. The pole, meant to represent a traditional flagpole, features a metal cap and stands on a matching metal lined base.
Four directional beams of light, symbolizing the Tribute in Light installation at Ground Zero in New York City where the Twin Towers once stood, are angled toward the pole to showcase signatures.
“The creation of ‘Free Standing’ provided citizens with a unique opportunity to permanently document their hope for peace,” said Summit County Executive Russ Pry.
The annual community art project also pays tribute to public safety personnel and members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The 9/11 Remembrance Art Project was established in 2002. Past art projects are on display in The Room at Church & Main, 175 S. Main St.
