Annual Firefighter’s Chili Challenge at Lock 3 Benefits Children’s Burn Unit

The City of Akron sponsors its 5th annual Firefighter's Chili Challenge, Friday, January 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Lock 3 on South Main Street in Downtown Akron.

Akron firefighters will once again present a challenge to other city departments to see who can concoct the best chili for Downtown workers.

The famous firehouse chili-makers will square off against other chili cooks for the benefit of Akron Children’s Hospital's Burn Unit. The contest has raised nearly $10,000 since the annual chili contest began at Lock 3 in 2007.

This year, Akron Firefighters will be trying to hang on to their reputation against the award-winning chili-makers from the Akron Police Detective Bureau. Also cooking in this year's red-hot event will be the city’s department of Economic Development, the Sewer Maintenance Department, plus teams from Summit County Clerk of Courts Dan Horrigan and Akron General Medical Center.

Five dollars buys chili eaters four tickets that can be used for four separate tastes or all four tickets can be used for a bowl of chili. Beer, soft drinks, water and coffee will also be available for purchase.

Special this year – Thirsty Dog Brewery's “Lock 3 Lager” which will be sold during this event only for just $2.

A panel of celebrity judges will decide the best of the bunch. The panel includes Beacon Journal Food Columnist Lisa Abraham, Chef Louis Prpich of the Chowder House, and Attorney Brian Moore of Roetzel & Andress – a previous winner in the chili challenge.
