Akron-Summit County Public Library to Host StoryCorps

During the last two weeks in July the Akron-Summit County Public Library will be host to StoryCorps, one of the largest oral history projects of its kind.

StoryCorps will be recording interviews at the Main Library Branch in Downtown Akron July 17-31.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit organization conceived in 2003 that has recorded over 50,000 oral history interviews since the project began.  The interviews include participants who know each other well and interview one another with the help of a trained facilitator. The facilitator helps participants decide which questions to ask and handles all of the technical aspects of the recording.

Reservations for interviews will be open to the general public starting Monday, June 22. For more information or to schedule one or more interviews, contact Cheri Goldner at 330-643-9030 or cgoldner@akronlibrary.org.

Participants receive a copy of the interview on a free audio CD.  If given permission, another copy is added to the StoryCorps Archive in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Akron-Summit County Public Library Special Collections Division will archive the local recordings.

The mission of StoryCorps is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening.  It creates a growing portrait of who we are as Americans.
