Akron Marathon Partners with NBC’s The Biggest Loser Contestants for 90-Day Fitness Challenge

The Akron Marathon announces a partnership with NBC’s The Biggest Loser contestants Phil and Amy Parham to offer a no-cost 90-Day Fitness Challenge seminar on Friday, September 23 at the John S. Knight Center.

The seminar, which typically costs between $59.95 and $79.95, is a part of the marathon’s day-long Fitness Expo.

“At the Akron Marathon, it is our mission to promote health and fitness and galvanize the community,” said Anne Bitong, executive director of the Akron Marathon.  “The 90-Day Fitness Challenge is a great opportunity to energize those who are not runners to consider running a portion of the Akron Marathon Team Relay in 2012.”

Five person relay distances range from 2.8 miles to 7.9 miles.

The seminar is the start to a 12-week program in which the Parhams share simple, practical knowledge in the areas of diet and exercise.  The challenge includes meal planners, instructional videos and a community forum.

“Many overweight people have a deep desire to change the health aspect of their lives,” said Amy Parham.  “This challenge helps them commit to that.  It gives them a community and a plan so they don’t have to tackle the problem alone.”

All are welcome to join the seminar; registration to the marathon is not required.  Event organizers encourage those who attend to form Fitness Challenge groups following the seminar.

The Parhams were contestants on season six of NBC’s The Biggest Loser:  Families in 2008.  During the season, they lost a combined total of 256 pounds, one of the highest percentages of weight loss of any married couple in the history of The Biggest Loser.  Since the show, they have started a journey as a couple to promote wellness and fitness to members of the public across the country.

The Akron Marathon is presented by Time Warner Cable and will take place downtown Akron on Saturday, September 24 at 7 a.m.  It features a 5-person relay, a half marathon and a full marathon.  Participants can register at http://www.akronmarathon.org/.
