The Akron Marathon Team Relay, presented by Novo Nordisk, is calling for residents of the city of Akron and surrounding communities to challenge themselves to become world-class athletes and compete in the Akron Marathon.
The marathon hosts the nation’s fourth-largest relay event, which comprises distances ranging from 2.8 miles to 7.9 miles.
“If you have run two miles in the last month, you can participate in the relay event,” said executive director Anne Bitong.
Those who are interested in taking part in the health and fitness challenge can create their own team at akronmarathon.org or find a team to join by using the Team Maker tool on the marathon’s website.
“It’s an extraordinary opportunity to be able to participate in this first-rate event in your own backyard,” said race director Jim Barnett. “One of the great things about the Akron Marathon is that participants don’t have to be able to run a full marathon or be fast in order to compete. We have many participants who walk their portion of the race.”
The health and fitness challenge comes in conjunction with a partnership between the marathon and Phil and Amy Parham of NBC’s The Biggest Loser (2008). The Parhams will be on-site at the marathon’s Health & Fitness Expo Friday, September 23, to speak about ways to live a healthier lifestyle.
“We have a cap of 6,000 participants for the Novo Nordisk Team Relay,” Bitong said. “Those who want to participate should register early before all of the team spots are filled.”
The Akron Marathon, presented by Time Warner Cable, will take place on Saturday, September 24, starting at 7 a.m. in downtown Akron. The registration deadline is September 19 or when the race cap is reached.
