Shawn Lyden, Esq., a partner with Brouse McDowell Legal Professional Association headquartered in Akron, will join Akron Children's Hospital as its executive vice president and general counsel as of Jan. 14.
Lyden, a native of Cleveland, is currently chair of Brouse McDowell's Health Care Practice Group, and has managed legal affairs for Akron Children's since 1996.
"I am delighted that Shawn is expanding upon his role at Children's by accepting this newly created administrative position," said President and CEO Bill Considine. "Children's is experiencing exponential growth and his experience gives him an unprecedented understanding of our mission and future goals. We look forward to his full-time presence at Children's, and we are confident that he will make a positive and long-lasting impact upon our organization."
In addition to managing the hospital's internal and external legal functions, Lyden will oversee Children's business development and planning initiatives, working closely with the hospital's Board of Trustees to set the organization's strategic direction. He also will administer the hospital's corporate compliance, risk management, government relations, and public relations and marketing departments.
"Of course, Shawn's physical presence will be missed at Brouse McDowell," said Jeffrey T. Heintz, managing partner. "However, Shawn's transition to his new position will help us enhance the quality and scope of our services to Children's Hospital - and that's good for everyone."
A graduate of Denison University and Case Western Reserve School of Law, Lyden practiced health care law as a partner in a large national law firm based in Chicago, prior to joining Brouse McDowell in 1994. In addition to Akron Children's, Lyden manages the legal affairs for a number of other Northeast Ohio health care providers and serves as special counsel for a variety of health care organizations in the region and nationally.
"I've never been associated with an organization that's more mission-focused than Akron Children's Hospital," said Lyden. "Every decision made is rooted in 'what's best for the children. I will miss my friends and partners at Brouse McDowell, but I'm excited to be a part of a team that has such a singular focus and look forward to becoming more involved in its day-to-day operations."
Lyden serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of LifeBanc, the organ procurement and tissue recovery agency for Northeast Ohio, and in January will be joining the Board of Directors of the Centers for Dialysis Care, a non-profit provider of kidney dialysis services based in Cleveland. He also is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association; Health Care Compliance Association; Society of Ohio Healthcare Attorney's; Healthcare Executives Association of Northeast Ohio; and the Akron, Ohio State and American Bar Associations.
Lyden and wife, Amy, reside in Akron and are the parents of four children.
