Location: Akron-Summit County Public Library
LIBRARY, METRO PARKS, SERVING SUMMIT COUNTY, CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, SUMMIT COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH AND AKRON MARATHON KICK OFF “MIND, BODY & SOLE”
Unique combination of partners to offer combined summer reading, exercise activity to enhance overall good health
Reading and exercise are mutually beneficial. Each has the power to brighten the spirit, stimulate the imagination, and improve health. Now Summit County residents can start their summer reading on the right foot with Mind, Body & Sole, a wellness activity and learning experience for the whole family to enjoy.
“As a complement to the Library’s annual Summer Reading Program, the goal of this program is to simultaneously encourage both reading and exercise. To help with this effort we are collaborating with the Akron Marathon, Summit County Public Health, and our two community assets along the Towpath Trail, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Metro Parks, Serving Summit County,” said David Jennings, Library Director. “Reading and exercise are keys to leading a vibrant life, individually and collectively as a community. We are trying to promote both through Mind, Body and Sole.”
The program is simple: read or listen to 26 books, e-books or articles and run/walk 26 miles or 52,000 pedometer steps between June 11 and September 10. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace, filling in the MB&S scorecard to track the number of items read and miles/steps taken. The scorecard is then returned to any Akron-Summit County Public Library to be stickered and entered into the drawing for prizes.
Jennings added that “the unique combination of partners is yet another example of the collaborative spirit in our community that seeks to improve the quality of life in Akron and Summit County. Together we encourage our residents of all ages to sign up for Mind, Body & Sole for a fun and active summer in 2012.”
Registration begins June 11 at all Akron-Summit County Public Library locations and includes a Summer Reading Program bag, a pedometer provided by Summit County Public Health and a MB&S scorecard and reading log. Participants who complete the program will receive a MB&S t-shirt, backpack tag, and will be included in drawings for great prizes at the Akron Marathon fitness expo on September 28.
