Downtown Beautification

As DAP strives to make sure the Downtown Akron experience is vibrant and appealing, downtown beautification is at the forefront of its goals. Through strategic placement throughout the downtown footprint, DAP sponsors flowerscapes with Keep Akron Beautiful and also owns and maintains its own set of floral planters.

Flower Pots: Floral planters, each handcrafted depicting different Akron scenes and seasons are found throughout the downtown footprint, offering visitors seasonal beauty in the downtown area.

The planters were individually crafted by local landscaper RickThomas of R.G. Thomas Landscape and Design, Inc. in Akron, and the artwork on each piece was customized by Dave Thomas, Rick’s brother.

Citing deep roots to the Akron area, this was a great project for the 30-year business. According to Rick, "We went downtown and took photographs of different places that held significance in the area." These photographs yielded depictions o the planters of Canal Park Stadium, canal boats, signal tree, flowers from Keep Akron Beautiful parks and even the Y-bridge.

KAB Flowerscapes: Through a partnership with Keep Akron Beautiful, DAP sponsors 11 Flowerscape sites that are planned, planted and maintained by Keep Akron Beautiful.

Holiday Displays

Akron’s holiday displays are part of a countless number of families' holiday tradition. Beginning in the 1950s, Akron area families would flock to the animated holiday window displays in the O’Neil’s and Polsky’s building windows downtown. The window displays were "unveiled" each Thanksgiving for the holiday season. It was a magical time. There was a period when the displays were brought inside the two department stores as part of their Santaland decor. By the end of the `80s both O'Neil's and Polsky's stores were gone, leaving a void in local holiday family traditions. Downtown Akron Partnership brought the vintage displays back to the Akron community in 1999.

In 2005, because the former store fronts were utilized, leaving a void of this holiday tradition, the displays were set up inside the Main Library downtown through the holiday season. DAP's collection includes a storybook display, Peter Pan, the Wizard of Oz, the Prince and Ice Princess, Santas of Christmas past, a train display, and Raggedy Ann.

Currently, these holiday displays can be found in the University of Akron Polsky's Building.

Tuba Summer

Tuba Summer--the summertime version of Akron's popular TubaChristmas--is held at downtown Akron's Cascade Plaza. Free and open to the public, Tuba Summer is conducted by Tucker Jolly and features summer favorites performed by tuba, sousaphone, baritone and euphonium musicians from throughout the region.

Audience members who arrive early can enjoy the sounds of a small ensemble from The University of Akron Steel Drum Band during the pre-concert festivities.

The concert, now in its eighth year, is co-sponsored by Downtown Akron Partnership and The University of Akron School of Music.

Green & Clean

This year, DAP hopes to make an impact with a variety of deep-cleaning projects that goes beyond its regular trash removal. Our goal is to engage the community in making our downtown “vibrant and valuable.”  During the Downtown Green & Clean event, business employees and community members will form teams and attack the task of deep-cleaning downtown.  Each team member will receive a t-shirt, goodie bag and a lunch celebration.  Morning or afternoon shifts are available.  Teams will benefit by taking ownership in the downtown they use to work or play.  Help DAP achieve its goal of showcasing the wide-range of support for a valuable and vibrant downtown.  Form a team of colleagues and sign up today to help us keep our downtown a destination for everyone. Click here for the registration form. Sign your team up today!
